Subject: Italy came out of the Second World War as a divided and depressed country. Against this backdrop, the decision was taken to conquer the second highest mountain in the world, the unexplored peak of K2. The organization was set up like a military operation, closer to the great ninetheenth-century expeditions than to the mountaineering challenges we are used to today. Italy conquered K2 thanks to the exceptional feats of the whole group. In Rome, on receiving the cablegram, the entire Parliament stood up to applaud. The conquest also helped the country get back on its feet again, immediately re-finding a united and winning identity.
