Subject: Closed to tourism for many years by international self-isolation, Burma is today a country of great social contrasts, populated by various ethnic and tribal groups that do not recognize the Burmese state as their national and historical country. The forced turn to modernity, imposed by the military dictatorship, has only created new affliction, accentuated by inequality and spread of poverty. The only cohesive strength of the country, over which the continual threat of a civil war impends, is the Buddhism faith.
